We are thrilled to welcome Valerie Burton back on Classroom 2.0 LIVE to share some of her valuable tips and tools for student responses to reading that help teachers assess their learning.
Webinar description:
They've been reading closely... now what?
We have given them the tools to be able to annotate, decode vocabulary and analyze the text on a variety of levels. Now it's time to allow them to show what they know. Assessment can be so much more than bubbling in an answer document. This session will explore some of the many different ways that students can create products that allow us to assess the knowledge gained.
Have them create and produce:
- Memes with the same overall message of nonfictional text.
- NoteCard Confession video that explores the overall theme of a fictional text.
- WordArt that highlights the character's motivating actions
- Paperslide videos that retell a nonfictional text
- Blackout Poems that remix the text and examine language used
- Six word memoirs or 4x4 responses
- ePortfolios (website, blogs, Padlet, Smore, etc.) to display artifacts and essays
Valerie is an English I teacher from West Jefferson High School, New Orleans, Louisiana. She is also the Department Head and winner of the May, 2009 Exemplary 21st teaching and learning contest! A contest sponsored by Jefferson Parish’s Technology Department
Her philosophy is to provide an inquiry-based atmosphere in her classroom. In her English I class she uses project based learning and technology to make learning enjoyable for all. Because her students have a variety of strengths, weakness and learning styles, she designs each lesson so that it is diversified enough so that all students are able to succeed. There are three elements that she believes are conducive to establishing such an environment, (1) the teacher acting as a guide, (2) allowing the child’s natural curiosity to direct his/her learning, and (3) promoting respect for all things and all people.
