Global Collaboration through Online Experiences

In order to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world, our students, who are our future leaders, need to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to engage in lifelong, cross-cultural learning and collaboration. More than ever, young people need the 21st-century skills for global competency, digital literacy, critical thinking and global collaboration among international peers. Global education begins with raising awareness of these global challenges! We are excited to have Sara Malchow as our special guest presenter who will be sharing awesome teaching strategies and tools to provide online experiences that will help our students to connect globally. If we help our students develop a global network and teach them how to collaborate they will be better prepared for this challenge.

Sara Malchow is a passionate and connected educator who believes technology integration in the primary grades is crucial to creating 21st century, global citizens. As a first grade teacher, Sara provided her students with many opportunities to connect and collaborate beyond the four walls of their classroom. Last year, Sara stepped out of the classroom and into a new role as as an Elementary Digital Learning Specialist in the Pulaski School District in Northeast Wisconsin, where she has been able to bring her love of technology integration and global collaboration to many classrooms, not just her own. She serves on the district coding committee and is also a member of her district's Apple Core Technology Training Team.

Sara is the creator of #EpicPals, a monthly, collaborative reading project for Kindergarten through 4th grade students and also puts out a weekly newsletter for teachers called, Malchow's Tech Bytes. She is also the new host of the annual St. Patrick’s Day Lucky Charms Global Graphing Project. She is an Apple Distinguished Educator, a member of the CopernicusEd Idea Lab, a Seesaw and Book Creator Ambassador, Epic! Master Teacher and is a Google Certified Educator. She has presented at numerous local, state, and national conferences and is always excited to connect and learn with others.

Paula Fehlinger: Featured Teacher

Over the years, we have had presentations by many excellent educators who have shared their strategies and examples of global connection and collaboration with their students. In order to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world, young people need to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to engage in lifelong, cross-cultural learning and collaboration. More than ever, young people need the 21st-century skills for global competency, digital literacy, critical thinking and global collaboration among international peers. According to Anne Mirtschin, "Student's believe that they can solve the problems of the world. If we help them to develop a global network and teach them how to collaborate then they may well do so!” We are really excited to have Paula Fehlinger as our March Featured Teacher who will be sharing her stories, experiences and teaching tools for helping her students to connect globally.

Paula Fehlinger has been with the East Penn School District for 19 years and has taught both first and second grades at Wescosville Elementary School. She received her teaching certificate from Moravian College and earned Masters Degrees in Classroom Technology, Instructional Technology and Instructional Media from Wilkes University. Paula is a Keystone Technology Innovator Star 2016. She is currently working on becoming a Google Certified Educator. Paula is the second-grade level district leader at East Penn and serves on several committees within the district to support grading and curriculum initiatives. She also leads and teaches several PD courses in the district. Recently, Paula presented a session about taking her classroom global at the Pennsylvania Educational Technology Expo & Conference in Hershey, PA. When she is not teaching, Paula enjoys cheering on her two sons, Colin and Carter, at their sporting and middle school events.

Global Collaboration Day, Global Ed Fair & Global Ed Conference

Lucy Gray, the co-founder of GlobalEd Events and the Global Education Conference Network, will join us this Saturday to give us an update on various upcoming global education events and resources. Come find out how to connect your classroom with the world! Students, teachers, and organizations will join together online to celebrate and demonstrate global collaboration on September 21, 2017.

On Global Collaboration Day, educators and professionals from around the world will host connective projects and events and invite public participation.
The primary goals of this 24-hour, worldwide event are to:
*demonstrate the power of global connectivity in classrooms, schools, institutions of informal learning and universities around the world
*introduce others to the collaborative tools, resources, and projects that are available to educators today
*to focus attention on the need for developing globally competent students and teachers throughout the world
Global Collaboration Day will take place on September 21 in participant time zones. Classrooms, schools, and organizations will design and host engaging online activities for others to join. Events will range from mystery location calls to professional development events to interviews with experts. All events will be collated in an online calendar viewable in participants’ individual time zones. Participants will be connected and share experiences via Twitter via the hashtag #globaled17.

A new GCD activity this year will be the Global Education Fair, a virtual opportunity for educators to gather information about projects and programs that benefit student learning and global awareness. Exhibitors will include teachers with projects to pitch as well as organizations that offer tools, programs, and services that promote globally connected teaching and learning. Global Collaboration Day is a project of GlobalEd Events and the Global Education Conference Network, a free online virtual conference that takes place every November during International Education Week. GCD, along with Global Education Day at ISTE and Global Leadership Week, are events designed to connect educators and keep global conversations going year round. Currently an education consultant advising a variety of organizations, Lucy Gray previously taught elementary grade levels in Chicago Public Schools and middle school computer science at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. She also has worked at the University of Chicago’s Urban Education Institute and the Center for Elementary Mathematics and Science Education. In 2007, Lucy founded the Global Education Collaborative, a network for educators interested in collaboration which has been expanded into the Global Education Conference Network. In her consulting life, she has led CoSN’s Leadership for Mobile Learning initiative, developed strategic plans and content for companies, provided professional development coaching to school districts, and presented at numerous conferences. Lucy also has received the distinctions of Apple Distinguished Educator and Google Certified Innovator.

We are in for a real treat with this presentation by our special guest, Steve Sherman. Steve is not only an inspired, energetic, passionate global educator but he has an incredible sense of humor. He has many stories and experiences to share about his world travels "without the traveling" through the hundreds of activities he has been involved in with students through the use of technology.

Here's a taste of his humor in his profile statement which is anything but typical (read carefully).
Steve is the Chief Imagination Officer of an Educational NGO in Capetown, South Africa called Living Maths. It is a mathematics, problem-solving and science enrichment program. He teaches approximately 4500 students weekly in schools around Cape Town and now recently, the world. He is passionate about sharing knowledge and empowering young people. He is also a multi-award purchasing educator and was voted most adorable educational innovator by his unbiased mother. He feels that it is his destiny to spread the joy of problem-solving and creative thinking to anyone who is willing to listen and even to those who are not. He knows Karate, Ju-jitsu and 2 other Japanese words. Steve is an Olympic medallist for the short jump and an accomplished Yo-yo winder.
