Farewell Celebration: Open Mic

8/25/2018

Classroom 2.0 LIVE Farewell Celebration

Date: Saturday August 25, 2018
Time: 9:00amPT/10:00amMT/
11:00amCT/12:00pm ET

Location: Blackboard Collaborate

Our Classroom 2.0 LIVE team has made the very difficult decision to discontinue our weekly webinars (see explanation below). We want to hold one final webinar this week, August 25th, so all of you who have been such an important part of our community can join us to celebrate and share memories. Our last "hurrah celebration " will be an open mic session similar to our Anniversary Celebrations. We hope all of you will join us and plan to take the mic to share your favorite memories, some of the shows that really made a difference to you with stories about how you used something you learned on Classroom 2.0 LIVE in your classrooms or professional lives. Whether you were a participant or presenter we’d love to hear your stories and take-aways from the show and the resources you learned about.

These are the questions we plan to ask on Open Mic so you can come prepared to share your thoughts and stories.
1) When did you first start joining us for our weekly webinars? Who would like to take the mic and share one of your favorite CR 2.0 memories?
2) What are some tech tools or strategies you learned about by participating in CR 2.0 Live? Please share any takeaways you have.
3) How has participating in our webinars enhanced your teaching, your connections, your “best practices”, etc.? Please share any and all ways.
4) Do you have a favorite “aha” moment from one of the webinars you’ve attended? Please share it with us.
5) Have you (or will you) ever included the CR2.0 Live webinar archives in any PD you’ve been a part of whether a face-to-face session, a virtual webinar, or an Edcamp session? 6) What free webinars, online PD opportunities, virtual conferences can you recommend to others to take part in?

The backstory to our decision:
To all of our very special friends and supporters of Classroom 2.0 LIVE, many of whom have been with us for the entire 9.5 years since we began back in 2009, we have some sad news to announce. After lots of soul searching and many conversations among our co-moderators, Advisory Team members, and Steve Hargadon, we have decided that the time has come to retire our live webinars. We have made so many great connections, both with presenters and participants, and have really enjoyed being able to provide so many outstanding, timely shows that have helped all of us to learn many ways to integrate technology into our classrooms and professional lives. While we love what we have been able to do and especially value the extensive Livebinders that continue to be a valuable resource to use and share, we have concluded that what we are doing is no longer unique and we are unable to compete with the incredible number of similar opportunities available for free for educators.

Over the past 6 months, we have been concerned that we have plateaued out with a fairly low number of participants each week and have not been able to increase the number of participants. When we invite presenters to spend their time to share their expertise and passions with us, we are disappointed that we cannot provide an audience large enough to make it worth their while. We explored many alternatives to consider what we could change. We discussed switching to an alternative platform, changing to a monthly show, shortening the show to 30 minutes, changing the day from Saturdays, changing the format to an open mic format where we would discuss topics and share resources rather than having presentations, among other things. We know it has been a challenge for new participants to struggle with the login demands of Blackboard Collaborate but that is just one of the factors. In the end, we concluded that it has been an incredible run, but that it is time for us to retire our live show. Our website, archived recordings and Livebinders will continue to be available to everyone and we know our friendships and connections with people around the world will continue.

Thank you all for being such faithful followers and supporters of Classroom 2.0 LIVE. We will treasure all of the memories! Kudos and huge thanks to our team who have worked tirelessly to provide these fantastic learning experiences for everyone!

Teaching the Global Goals in Kindergarten

8/18/2018

Sharon Davison

Date: Saturday August 18, 2018
Time: 9:00amPT/10:00amMT/
11:00amCT/12:00pm ET

Location: Blackboard Collaborate

In this week's webinar, we are so proud to have Sharon Davison joining us as our special guest presenter sharing information, ideas, and projects that support the Sustainable Development Goals for the world. Although the experiences she will share from #TeachSDGs are primarily related to younger students, the goals and resources she will be sharing are critical for all students and adults, and we know you are going to feel so excited and empowered after hearing Sharon share her passion for the work being done by connected educators around the world. This is relevant to teachers and educators for any age group.

In 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 goals for a better world by 2030. These goals have the power to end poverty, fight inequality and stop climate change. Guided by the goals, it is now up to all of us, governments, businesses, civil society and the general public to work together to build a better future for everyone. The Global Goals will be met if we all work together. All over the world actions are being taken to make our planet more sustainable. The #TeachSDGs movement connects with global educators dedicated to responding to a call to action within education to meet the Sustainable Development Goals.
They provide open and accessible resources, lessons plans, and global projects directly aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Webinar Description:
Sharon will be sharing how she explores the global goals with young children. She will highlight a couple of service learning opportunities that she has explored with the global goals as a lens and the impact it has had on her classroom, students, parents and the school community.

Sharon Davison is a passionate educator who believes in creativity and innovation. She has the privilege of being a public school teacher for over 3 decades. She is committed to making a difference for her students, their families and other educators, who like herself, care and are committed to making the world better. She believes in the use of synchronous and asynchronous tools as opportunities to enhance, enrich and connect learning opportunities. Her classroom is open globally. She creates a learning culture that is not only rich in resources but opportunities. Through collaboration around a common need, we can promote positive change for the world.

We are so excited to be back after our summer break and we have the perfect welcome back webinar for you! Getting the new school year off to a great start for both teachers and students is a high priority. We are thrilled to have Shelly Sanchez Terrell, one of our favorite presenters and a faithful supporter of Classroom 2.0 LIVE, as our special guest presenter this week! Shelly will be inspiring us with her fantastic ideas and resources for kicking off the new school year with ideas and tools for icebreakers and community building for both teachers and students.

"It's the little conversations that build the relationships and make an impact on each student." - Robert John Meehan

We can transform our physical and virtual classrooms into active learning communities, where students support each other. The best communities allow students to contribute, collaborate, create, and get to know each other. Students need to build relationships with their peers in order to prevent issues with bullying and ensure the support of one another in succeeding in learning goals. We can encourage this by implementing team building activities, icebreakers, getting-to-know you activities, and collaborative tasks. Shelly is excited to share her fun, inspiring activities and tools with us in our webinar today!

Shelly Sanchez Terrell is an international speaker, elearning and digital learning specialist and the author of Hacking Digital Learning Strategies: 10 Ways to Launch EdTech Missions in Your Classroom, The 30 Goals Challenge for Teachers: Small Steps to Transform Your Teaching, and Learning to Go: Lesson Ideas for Teaching with Mobile Devices, Cell Phones and BYOT. She has trained teachers and taught learners in over 20 countries as an invited guest expert by organizations, like UNESCO Bangkok, the Venezuelan-US Embassy, Cultura Inglesa of Brazil, the British Council in Tel Aviv, IATEFL Slovenia, EduTECH Australia, and HUPE Croatia. She has been recognized by the ELTon Awards, The New York Times, NPR, and Microsoft’s Heroes for Education as a leader in the movement of teacher driven professional development as the founder and organizer of various online conferences, Twitter chats, MOOCs, and webinars. Recently, she was named Woman of the Year by the National Association of Professional Women, awarded a Bammy Award as a founder of #Edchat, and named as one of the 10 Most Influential People in EdTech by Tech & Learning. Her latest project is the creation of Edspeakers to enrich the field of education with passionate voices (spoken and written) from those of diverse experiences and backgrounds.

As our school year comes to a close, this is often the time of year when teachers feel overwhelmed physically and emotionally. Consumed with end-of-year tasks such as grades, report cards, awards assemblies, class parties, cleaning and packing up the classroom and much more, they are completely exhausted. In this week's webinar our special guest presenter,
Kim Strobel, will share her passion for happiness and her tips for helping teachers to learn more about how her happiness tips can bring renewed energy to their teaching lives.

Webinar Description:
In her role as a happiness coach, Kim Strobel has extensively studied and researched the topics of Happiness and Positive Psychology. She has found that when one’s personal happiness increases, he or she is able to affect positive change in education and business outcomes. She captivates audiences of teachers by showing them how the Science of Happiness can help transform your classroom into one where students love to learn and are able to thrive. Kim sprinkles happiness tips and tricks into her education workshops, ensuring teachers re-enter their classrooms with renewed purpose and passion.

Kim Strobel isn’t just the owner of Strobel Education. She’s its driving force. Her wisdom, positivity, and strength inform every aspect—and it shows in the inspiring workshops she presents to teachers who seek to make a difference. She puts herself “in the trenches” with teachers because she was once there herself and knows how important support and encouragement are in creating a successful classroom.

A licensed ELA teacher for grades K-12, Kim has taught in classrooms at all grade levels during her almost 20 years as an education professional. She began her career teaching fourth grade, during which time she served on numerous committees devoted to improving the curriculum and culture of the schools. She next served as a K-12 Literacy Coordinator, helping to develop a school-wide plan to improve literacy achievement and implement new common core literacy standards. Kim found her next challenge as Director of Curriculum and Instruction for a school district, during which time she developed curriculum in all content areas, K-12; collaborated with teachers and administrators to identify instructional needs; and served as a liaison with state and local agencies. Throughout her career, Kim has been recognized at the state and local level for her achievements and contributions to the education field. And most recently, she’s taken her vision of reimagining education to the national stage as a featured keynote speaker at the Innovative Schools Summit in Atlanta, and the School Discipline Conference in Las Vegas.

Professionally, Kim’s a teacher, a consultant, a speaker, a happiness coach and an aspiring author. But her personal life is just as full. When she’s not firing up educators with her signature mix of excitement and experience, she’s a die-hard runner, an advocate for her community’s abandoned animals, and a family-oriented gal who loves spending time with her husband Scott, their four children, two grandkids, and three pups.

Date: Saturday April 28, 2018
Time: 9:00amPT/10:00amMT/
11:00amCT/12:00pm ET

Location: Blackboard Collaborate

If you're looking for inspiration coupled with practical tips and great insights, look no further than our fantastic presenter, Matt Miller! I know all of us at one time or another have wished that we could "ditch" some of the things we are expected to do but we're not quite sure what to do instead. In today's presentation Matt is offering us a lifeline with "10 Things to Ditch in Education (and What to do Instead)"  Matt is always inspirational, passionate, humorous and filled with emotion about his desire to making learning the best it can be for students everywhere, and we are thrilled to welcome him back on Classroom 2.0 LIVE!

Webinar Description
The world is changing, and education is changing with it ... very quickly in some ways and very slowly in others. When we aren't getting the results from "what we've always done" anymore, it's time to change. In this webinar, we will talk about several things you might consider "ditching" -- for a lesson, a week or the rest of your career. You'll come away with practical ideas to use in class tomorrow AND some great opportunities and resources. Don't miss it!

Matt Miller is a teacher, blogger and presenter from West Central Indiana. He has infused technology and innovative teaching methods in his classes for more than 10 years. He is the author of the book Ditch That Textbook: Free Your Teaching and Revolutionize Your Classroom and writes at the Ditch That Textbook blog about using technology and creative ideas in teaching. He is a Google Certified Innovator, Bammy! Top to Watch in 2016, and winner of the WTHI-TV Golden Apple Award. Onalytica named him one of the top 10 influencers in educational technology and elearning worldwide.

After trying to do the traditional “teach by the textbook” for a few years, he launched into a textbook-less path where learning activities were often custom-produced for his students as well as infused with technology. He likes the results a lot, and his students do, too.

Matt has presented to thousands of teachers at dozens of workshops on a number of topics related to educational technology, world language instruction and more. He combines a conversational, engaging speaking style with loads of resources, leaving teachers equipped and inspired to move forward.
