Location: Blackboard Collaborate

Join us for a "bang-up" opportunity to wrap up our school year broadcasts and send you into the summer break with awesome ideas and resources being shared in this Open Mic show "What's on your Summer Bucket List?" During this Open Mic session facilitated by the always amazing facilitator extraordinaire, Paula Naugle, participants will take turns getting on the mic to share something related to one of the guiding questions.

Q1 What is the first PD book you plan on reading this summer and why?
Q2 What conferences (live/virtual) would you like to attend this summer and why?
Q3 What new tech tool/toy would you like to add to your tech bag this summer?
Q4 What fun places will you plan to visit this summer?
Q5 What hobbies will you pursue during the summer?

You can sign up to share using this form http://tinyurl.com/liveclass20openmic  or if time is available you can just raise your hand to take the mic to share. Everyone who gets on the mic to share will be eligible for a prize drawing! Be sure to check out your audio in advance so you'll know your mic will be working when it's your turn to share! Wear a headset to prevent echo/feedback. We can't wait to be inspired by everyone who will be sharing!

This will be our last show before our annual break for ISTE and the summer break. We will resume our regular shows on Saturday, August 5th with a fabulous presentation by Holly Clark and Tanya Avrith on "The Google Infused Classroom":  Using Google Tools based on  pedagogy and making student thinking visible.

A Nation Without School Librarians Google Map
This map developed in March 2010, illustrates the number of school districts within the U.S. that have eliminated their certified school librarian positions.  Despite documented research that indicates the value of a certified school librarian to the academic achievement of students at all levels, the insanity continues in 2013.

11:00amCT/12:00pm ET

Location: Blackboard Collaborate

We are very excited to have Mark Moran returning to Classroom 2.0 LIVE to bring us updates with several of the passions in his life: SweetSearch and FindingDulcinea, the Choose2Matter initiative he co-founded with Angela Maiers, and steps for better online research. Mark will discuss how to guide students to become self-aware, empathetic, creative, confident, courageous, well-informed, and passionate agents of social change.

Mark is the Founder of Dulcinea Media, an Author, and former General Counsel of 24/7 Media. Mark creates products that help students become the citizens the world needs them to be: self-aware, empathetic, empowered, creative, courageous, well-informed, and passionate agents of social change. SweetSearch is highly recognized as the best search engine for student research. He has worked with educators and students at hundreds of schools at live events and professional development workshops. Mark and Angela Maiers have created an online professional development course called "Choose2Matter," which challenges teachers and students to accept that they matter and have something important to contribute the world - and then helps them do just that. It fosters authentic, passion-based learning. Participants will become self-aware, empathetic, empowered, collaborative, innovative, passionate agents of social change. It comes with a classroom implementation package and will be available in June 2017. The course takes six seat hours; it includes activities and group discussion that extend the learning for a full course or a full year. In addition, Mark is also creating an online course to teach educators, students, and employees how to do effective online research.

The Write Stuff: An Author's Lessons in Literacy

5/20/2017

Dianne de Las Casas

Date:Saturday May 20, 2017
Time:9:00amPT/10:00amMT/
11:00amCT/12:00pm ET

Location: Blackboard Collaborate

We are in for a wonderful treat in our show this week with a very special guest presentation by
Dianne de Las Casas. Dianne has been doing "author-in-residence" residencies at schools throughout Louisiana for over 16 years. During her week at the schools, she has the students explore many ways of incorporating literacy lessons with game design, writers' workshop, and performance art through her fun and creative lessons. The students also learn about fractured fairytales and how to write them, which is a genre many of her own books are about. Each and every student feels like an author by the time Dianne's week is over. Dianne will share her experiences as an author-in-residence at schools and inspire attendees with her fun lessons in literacy.

Dianne de Las Casas is a Kidlit Author, Founder of Picture Book Month, Manager of Kid Chef Eliana, Storyteller, Speaker, Literacy Advocate, Traveler, Foodie & Mom, Harvey LA (New Orleans). A champion for literacy, she is the founder of the international initiative, Picture Book Month, which celebrates picture books during the month of November. She is the author of twelve children’s picture books including best-selling titles: The Cajun Cornbread Boy, Mama’s Bayou, There’s A Dragon in the Library, and Dinosaur Mardi Gras. Her latest titles are The Little “Read” Hen, The House that Santa Built, and Cinderellaphant all by Pelican Publishing. Her twelve award-winning professional development books for teachers and librarians published by Libraries Unlimited include the best-selling Handmade Tales: Stories to Make, award-winning Scared Silly: 25 Tales to Tickle and Thrill, and acclaimed A is for Alligator: Draw and Tell Tales from A-Z. Handmade Tales 2: More Stories to Make and Take is her latest professional development title.

Dianne has also created numerous storytelling CDs that have won multiple parenting awards and have received rave reviews. She was recently honored with a listing in the Great Lives in History Series (Salem Press, 2012) in the Asian and Pacific Islander American edition. She is the mother of illustrator and graphic designer, Soleil Lisette, and 15-year-old culinary sensation, Kid Chef Eliana. Dianne loves crafting and cooking and enjoys time in the kitchen with Eliana. Her specialties: Writing for the children's market,
writing teacher and librarian resource materials, performances and residencies for children in grades PK-8, and Teacher and Librarian Training.

Date:Saturday May 13, 2017
Time:9:00amPT/10:00amMT/
11:00amCT/12:00pm ET

Location: Blackboard Collaborate

We are thrilled to welcome three amazing, connected educators as our special guest presenters to share their passion, experiences, and resources for: "
Connecting Your Students with the World: Tools and Projects to Make Global Collaboration Come Alive, K-8" Billy, Jerry, and Paula connected to each other first online and then face-to-face at ISTE. For almost two years they met every Sunday evening in a Google Hangout with some other like-minded educators, to plan ways they could connect their students and do collaborative projects. During this webinar, you will learn how to make connections that will help you facilitate becoming a globally connected teacher and your students becoming globally connected learners. The trio will take you through starting with Mystery Location Calls, Mystery Number Calls, and other simple collaborative projects that take 15-20 minutes of time to doing more extensive collaborative projects that could last for an extended period of time. They have “been there and done it” and they even wrote a book about their experience and the projects they have done.

Bill Krakower is currently the Computer Technology Instructor, Gifted & Talented, STEAM Teacher for grades three and four. He is also a co-teacher of ELA for Special Education students at Beatrice Gilmore Elementary School in the Woodland Park Public School District in New Jersey. For the past ten years, Billy has served as Special Education Teacher, in the Inclusion setting, and Resource Room setting. Billy is the co-author of four books, "Connecting Your Students with The World," "Using Technology to Engage Students with Learning Disabilities," "140 Twitter Tips for Educators." and “Hacking Google for Education”.  @wkrakower

Paula Naugle lives in New Orleans, Louisiana where she teaches 4th graders ELA and social studies in a public school just outside of the city. She has taught for 42 years and is passionate about preparing her students for their futures as 21st-century digital citizens. While in her 4th grade her students use web tools such as Edmodo, Google Hangouts and Docs, and Seesaw. Paula is a Discovery Education STAR and member of the DEN Leadership Council of Louisiana, a Microsoft Innovative Educator, and one of the organizers for #edcampNOLA, and a host for Classroom 2.0 LIVE. @plnaugle

Jerry Blumengarten is a retired educator who taught in New York City, but he is probably best known as Cybraryman1 on Twitter. He is the curator of thousands of webpages where he says he is trying to catalog the internet for students, educators, and parents. He is passionate about helping others become connected educators. He does this through his participation in Twitter chats such as #edchat, #engsschat, #satchat, #4thchat, and more, and by keynoting around the country at conferences. Jerry is also a member of the Council of Peers of the Academy of Education Arts and Sciences and a commentator on BAM! Radio. @cybraryman1

Choose To Be Nice

Date:Saturday May 6, 2017
Time:9:00amPT/10:00amMT/
11:00amCT/12:00pm ET

Location: Blackboard Collaborate

We are excited to have as our special guest presenter, Dina Creiger, who is the Founder of "Choose to be Nice." During her presentation we will find out how schools across the country are creating a lasting culture of kindness with an innovative program that shows students how to be nice and gives them an opportunity to make a difference in their community. The students learn about important values such as respect, friendship and acceptance with the adorable nine nice mice and exciting classroom activities. The program is part of an international movement to promote a simple promise to be nice and improve how people interact with each other.

Dina Creiger has turned a passion for kindness into a social enterprise with the driving goal of inspiring people to treat each other with compassion. She created a movement around asking people to make and keep a promise to be nice, which thousands around the globe have done. The movement includes a program that enables schools to create a lasting culture of kindness through an innovative curriculum with classroom activities and nine adorable mice representing important values such as respect, friendship and acceptance.

Dina understands the need for kindness in schools through her experience as an involved mother who served as PTO President and treasurer and raised funds to bring smart boards into the school’s classrooms. She has an undergraduate degree from Boston University and an MBA from Babson College.  In addition to making the world a nicer place, her passions include her family, reading, education, connecting with genuine people, laughing, making people smile and playing with her big Golden Doodle named Football.

Parenting in the Digital Age

Steve Garton-CommonSense

Date:Saturday April 22, 2017
Time:9:00amPT/10:00amMT/

Location: Blackboard Collaborate

Digital citizenship and keeping kids safe online is such an important topic. We were so proud to be able to feature #digcitkids in a recent webinar with Curran Dee and Marialice Curran, a mother/son team who are the co-founders of #digcitkids. Curran shared "Digital Citizenship from a Kid's Perspective" and it was so exciting to hear about their initiative. In today's webinar we are thrilled to hear from Steve Garton from Common Sense Education to learn how the amazing Common Sense resources can support parents and educators with "Parenting in the Digital Age." The Common Sense resources are exemplary, and this is the "go to" site for teachers and parents alike when they want support for curriculum, ideas and materials that will help promote safe online activities with kids. Steve will share information about many of these resources including Common Sense Media, Common Sense Education, Common Sense Kids Action and Connecting Families. His insights into the research about how teens/tweens are using media and ways to help them find balance with their digital lifestyle will be invaluable and will provide ways parents and teachers can support activities such as video games, social media, screen time, sharing online and much more!

Steve Garton is Senior Manager for Common Sense Education. He is an expert in meaningful technology integration, particularly in large-scale initiatives. He supports districts with professional development planning, program monitoring, student assessment, and communication across stakeholder groups. Prior to joining Common Sense, Steve was the Coordinator of Educational Technology for the Maine Department of Education. At the Maine Department of Education, he led the professional development programs for the Maine Learning Technology Initiative, the state’s 1:1 program that supported over 12,000 teachers and administrators. As a member of the department’s leadership team, he provided policy support and leadership. Steve was co-chair of the Smarter Balanced Consortium Technology Approach Committee and led the initial technology readiness and assessment infrastructure work. Additionally, he served as a member of the advisory council of the Maine School and Library Network, Maine’s statewide broadband network serving K-12 schools and public libraries. Steve has served as a technology director at the county level (Trumbull County, Ohio) and a classroom teacher and technology coordinator of the Sharon City School District in Pennsylvania.

Curran is the Chief Kid Officer of DigCitKids (digcitkids.com) who advocates for parents and children to learn alongside each other to develop skills digital natives and digital immigrants alike need to use on a daily basis. His past advocacy work includes Twitter chats, a TEDxYouth speech in Burlington, Mass. Most recently,  Curran was interviewed on TeacherCast discussing the idea of kids as global citizens.  “When kids are passionate about creating change, they need to learn with the world. That happens digitally,” he said. “I think even kids in elementary school should be able to have a voice and be able to make connections beyond the classroom walls.” In the future, he has plans to do workshops offline that will help kids of all ages connect, collaborate, learn, understand and solve problems safely through offline activities and online discussions.

Curran works alongside his mom, Marialice B.F.X. Curran, Ph.D., founder of the Digital Citizenship Institute and cofounder of the Digital Citizenship Summit, both based in Connecticut.
Dr. Curran has partnered with her ten-year old and the two are recognized professionally as a mother/son digital citizenship team. The dynamic duo model best practices while working with parents, educators, students and community organizations. “As a teacher, principal and associate professor, my most rewarding work has been advocating with my son as he paves the way for a new generation.”  Teachers, parents, students, colleges and ed/tech industry experts are learning from their example. “Our mission at DigCitKids is to keep asking a wider audience, ‘How are you using technology every day to make a difference for your community, for other kids and for the world?’ and then showing them how to get started,” She is passionate about empowering students around the world with positive and practical solutions.  An international speaker and named one of the Top 10 Digital Citizenship bloggers to follow in 2014 by Common Sense Media, Curran co-founded (2011) and moderates the digital citizenship #digcit chat on Twitter and also serves on the leadership team for the Digital Citizenship PLN through ISTE.
