On Classroom 2.0 LIVE we always look forward to our Featured Teacher presentations because we love getting a peek inside the classrooms and the inspiration shared! We are very excited to welcome
Jennifer Regruth as our April Featured Teacher in this week’s presentation! Jennifer plans to share some of the things that fuel her passions and drive her teaching every day. She strongly believes in the importance of setting a climate for learners because the climate you foster in your learning environment will determine the success of it. Students and teachers are directly affected by the physical and emotional climates set in the room and you, as the teacher, largely have control of these. Making your workspace a safe, pleasurable environment in every way for both students and yourself will ensure growth for everyone.

Jennifer will be sharing about Classroom Champions and how it impacts so many kids. The organization pairs Olympic and Paralympic athletes with high poverty schools, (classroomchampions.org) With each monthly lesson, students learn life skills like, perseverance, healthy living and setting goals. Having a high profile athlete as a mentor is very motivating! Skype/GHO has completely changed how her students think about the world. To have a live video chat with scientists, Olympic athletes, other classrooms has been fun and inspiring. She also uses Twitter/YouTube/Instagram to help them connect globally. She continually assures her students that they have the world at the fingertips to learn whatever they want! Along with that comes Digital Citizenship, safety, and self-regulation and the importance of their digital footprint. She strongly believes that tech should be thought of as a tool for learning, researching and organizing ideas. Finding creative ways to get the kids motivated to learn, making global connections through Google Hangouts, Twitter, and online tools, being willing to try new things, and sharing new ideas with others are all priorities. She loves that she is in a profession that combines 3 of her favorite hobbies: people, technology, and learning and that she can use creativity to blend these together.

Jennifer Regruth teaches fourth-graders at Margaret R. Brown Elementary School in Seymour, IN. Her career started in the fall of 1990 when she began her student-teaching experience at Brown. The following school year, she was hired as a third-grade teacher and has been at Brown now for 27 years. The past 19 years, she has taught fourth grade. She was recently awarded Educator of the Year for 2018 by the Seymour Chamber of Commerce. She is a Google Certified Educator, Classroom Champions Educator since 2012, a co-moderator of #4thchat since 2011, a Seesaw Ambassador and a tech team coach. She is truly an inspirational teacher leader!

We are excited to welcome our special guest presenter, Pooja Agarwal, Ph.D, who will be sharing some fantastic information about the brain and memory! This is guaranteed to challenge all of our brains! She will be providing information about “retrieval practice” which is a learning strategy where you focus on getting information OUT of students' heads rather than trying to get it IN!

Webinar Description:
"Unleash the Science of Learning: Transform Teaching with Strategies from Cognitive Science"
There is a lot to learn in the world. Students can’t learn everything, and educators can’t teach everything. Especially not over, and over, and over again each time students forget. What can we do to improve learning and reduce forgetting? How can we use our limited amount of classroom time and make learning stick? Based on more than 100 years of research, cognitive scientists have established powerful strategies that substantially improve learning for diverse age groups, subject areas, and education rigor. In this workshop, Assistant Professor and Cognitive Scientist Pooja K. Agarwal, Ph.D., goes behind the scenes and illuminates key discoveries, teaching strategies, and classroom resources based on the science of learning. Armed with evidence-based strategies, it’s time to challenge our perceptions of learning and transform teaching in our classrooms.

Pooja K. Agarwal, Ph.D. is an expert in the field of cognitive science. She has conducted learning and memory research in a variety of classroom settings for more than 10 years. Passionate about evidence-based education, Pooja has extensive teaching experience in K-12 and higher education, as well as expertise in education policy at state and national levels. Currently, she is an Assistant Professor at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, teaching psychological science to exceptional undergraduate musicians. Pooja leads RetrievalPractice.org, a hub of cognitive science research, resources, and tips for educators. Pooja's research is supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education. In addition, her work has been featured in the New York Times, Education Week, and Scientific American, as well as academic journals, books, and podcasts.

Over the years, we have had presentations by many excellent educators who have shared their strategies and examples of global connection and collaboration with their students. In order to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world, young people need to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to engage in lifelong, cross-cultural learning and collaboration. More than ever, young people need the 21st-century skills for global competency, digital literacy, critical thinking and global collaboration among international peers. According to Anne Mirtschin, "Student's believe that they can solve the problems of the world. If we help them to develop a global network and teach them how to collaborate then they may well do so!” We are really excited to have Paula Fehlinger as our March Featured Teacher who will be sharing her stories, experiences and teaching tools for helping her students to connect globally.

A New Spin on PD

2/3/2018

Dennine Leschinsky

Date: Saturday February 3, 2017
Time: 9:00amPT/10:00amMT/
11:00amCT/12:00pm ET

Location: Blackboard Collaborate

Professional development is an important part of our lives as educators, but often it falls short of meeting our needs. Too often we find ourselves in "sit and git" sessions where we have to listen to information that seems irrelevant with no way to personalize the experience to make it relevant. Fortunately, there are many educators who are working to change that type of PD experience, and our special guest for this week's webinar, Dennine Leschinsky, has some very exciting ideas to share with us for alternatives to traditional PD. Join us to hear
Dennine's "New Spin on PD."

Webinar Description:
If you build it, they will come. PD in our district has evolved to include new designs including the implementation of a learning lounge, empower hour and breakFAST. Each offers a unique spin on PD which begins with district and building initiatives and is driven by teacher choice. Each has similar components of a learning lounge. Clearly defined, a learning lounge is a place where educators can come together to learn and collaborate about instructional content and practices. It is a relaxed, interactive environment, much like that of a craft fair or flea market where shoppers browse and converse with vendors about their wares. Our goal is to allow our teachers to have a comfort level with some of the instructional practices prior implementation. Empower hour is a structure much like an EdCamp where teachers are empowered to share strategies or technology tools with other teachers. This has replaced our faculty meetings. BreakFAST is a type of PD we used to strengthen our teacher’s use of a new formative assessment screening tool we implemented this year. This session is perfect for anyone who plans professional development or faculty meetings.

Dennine Leschinsky is in her 22nd year in education. As a certified Reading Specialist and veteran teacher, Dennine owns and operates an Early Intervention agency called, Connective Interventions Services where she supervises and designs professional development for 30 staff members. In addition, Dennine’s experience as an educator includes teaching preschool, first, second, and third grades, as well as serving as a Literacy and Technology Coach for grades 6-8.

Currently, Dennine is the Instructional Specialist at Wescosville Elementary School in the East Penn School District. In this role, she provides instructional coaching and also serves as a school-based MTSS coordinator. Dennine works collaboratively with district level administration to plan systemic professional development experiences. Additionally, she has presented at several local and state conferences spanning her career. Dennine is grateful to Peg Volak, former colleague from Pennridge School District and current board member for Classroom 2.0 , for this exciting opportunity.  She looks forward to sharing some of her favorite PD spins with you today!
